Hey everybody, things have been kind of busy in preparation for the move out West. Saturday, June 18th was simply epic. I feel like I am born again from that show. With the long road trip from Mile 0 (zero) Key West all the way up to Pittsburgh, finding out my grandma had died while driving up through South Carolina and all the emotions that go along with music, it was just an emotionally charged up night. Nothing but love from the crowd, condolences and MAD energy. I'm stuck on that night, I can't even believe it is already Wednesday. No worries though since then I have been taking care of the family in this time of toughness and also working on a "DJ Sirius" podcast for all of those who love my hard beat efforts under that name, and I've been going over the video from that night to put together something cool to check out on youtube.com. Don't forget that I will be releasing some hard beats under DJ Sirius very soon as well, so please stay posted.

Moving and considing the many aspects of house

Well EDM lovers and general freaks I have some crazy news for you, and mostly for me. I'm moving to Seattle! Well, not exactly Seattle, but very close to Seattle in a city called Olympia, Wa. This excites me especially considering the fact that one of my favorite bands from all time, Rancid, wrote a song about the city. I loved Seattle when I went out there with my girl in Aug/Sept of 2010. After living in the bright and hot sun of South Florida for the past 4-5 years I am look forward to experiencing some true - full blown - seasons again. I think it is funny when people "warn me" that it is grey in the Pacific Northwest. I typically laugh, and if I have the energy I say quite bluntly - "I'm from Pittsburgh". Those who understand the North East get it, those who are idiots, don't.

I'm a vampire by nature and design, so having cold days where all I can do is write songs really excites me. You can't do that in Florida because you feel guilty. I mean how can you justify writing inside when you live minutes from South Beach and/or on the unique island of Key West. You really can't, unless it is wet season and a heavy rain storm or coming down. The only songs I could write were kind of disgustingly happy party anthems about drinking beer on the beach and pissing off those idiotic late 30 somethings who were going bald but still wanted to be club-life sheik, so they shave their heads, buy tight black shirts with rhinestones on them and join a gym. I figured, few people feel that way so few people would want to hear me preach about how awesome life is drinking on the beach and DJ'ing. HOWEVER, perhaps these unsung songs could be a vehicle to find a good mood when life is odd. Similar to how Third Eye Blind's song, "Ode To Maybe" does for me. Maybe I will record those and put them out yet. Perhaps leaving the area of inspiration will help me to do so. Especially now that I see that it really was just a limited amount of time to experience such beauty and fun on the beaches of South Florida.

Anyways, thats the big news for now. So Seattle, Portland and Vancouver ravers, nightlife freaks and club peeps hit me up! I'm looking for any and all opportunity out there with open arms.

Now one to my blabber about house music. You know the industry suggests you define yourself specifically so that people know what you do. It's good for fans and those who book you. My big problem is that I can't! While some vagueness is more wildly accepted among the EDM DJ commnuity than say other branches of the music business like the country-western community or the hard rock community, still, I find myself struggling with this.

Am I an Electro House DJ who primarily reaches out to a younger rave like crowd, or am I a clubby house DJ who plays really subby stuff only reaching out to a "sophisticated" (whatever that means), older and dress code enforced nightclub crowd? It's hard to say. With the trends in EDM, it's tough. I like what I like and that ranges from in your face, mohawk spiked high, house music that makes you want to bounce to just good deep house/techno that grooves the soul and if it isn't fast enough for you then you should probably do less drugs. The reality is that I like both and want the chance to play both. I'm not selfish enough or one genre minded enough to just play what I play for better or for worse. I play about 40% of what I want and about 60% of what the crowd responds to/seems to be what the party needs and calls for. So if you are still reading at this point, congrats. If you see me at a rave, get ready for energy and bang. If you see me in a clubby setting and depending on the mood, look, crowd and time of night get ready for anything from deep grooving shit to burn one down to, to high energy tribal stuff that works well with a club crowd (older and drinking) but not so over the top and high energy that is becomes a rockstar electro rave (which I love too). All of this is also quite relative to you, the listener, the patron, the one giving me the motivation to continue going in one direction or another. Perhaps I shouldn't consider this ability a curse. Maybe there are people out there that would kill to be able to break the shackles of sticking to one genre but for one reason or another just don't know how. One thing I would like to stress that WILL be the one thing that is consistent is ME; my style of DJ'ing, mixing and big smile. I feel that is what people ultimate want. When I think about some of my favorite DJ's like Carl Cox or DJ Irene, I really care if they play Hard Techno or Deep House because I am going for them. I want to see what they will DO with the music. I like it all, so I am happy to hear just about anything in a night. But what really gets me is the personality the DJ puts into the tracks. They way is was mixed and the created ear candy that has me wondering just what the hell they just did. The big smile and crowd interaction. Thats what sets people apart, IMO. Tracks are so globalized now that 2 DJ's could play the same songs in the same order, BUT the one who does it creatively with physical attributes that attract me and crowd engagement - that is what will win me over.

Speaking of other directions, if you love hard dance/hardcore don't forget that that is where my roots were as am EDM DJ. I still DJ Harder beats under the name DJ Sirius. I will be playing in my hometown of Pittsburgh on June 18th. This may be my last show before moving out West. HOWEVER, I will never be too far away. Message me, message you local event organizer and tell them that you want more "Mikey" or "DJ Sirius" or my latest venture that I am still trying to find the time to do which will be called "Echo Skies" or maybe "Echo Eyes" which one do YOU dig?

Echo Skies/Eyes is going to be my offer of Techno/Psy/Trance. I feel like these genres are severely under represented. I would love to bring that experimental mixing style that I love to use to these genres. Once again, the way I'll lean on any given night just depends. The venue and setting may call for mostly techno with a little bit of outer space; so I'll play a tad bit of Psy. Other big rooms may simply want the mighty and uplifting style of Epic Trance with some vocal tracks and some buildups points, valleys of cool down and a breakdown point or two thanks to some progressive trance. In reality I like to hit more than one genre across a set. Anyone who has ever seen me knows that whether I'm playing House genres (electro, funky, tribal, progressive) or Hard Beats (Hardcore, DnB, Hard Dance, Hard House, Hard Techno, Hard Trance, Hard Style).

In closing, I took the long way to tell you that like many of my influences (Carl Cox, DJ Irene, Donald Glaude, DJ Dan...) I LIKE TO GENRE HOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's pretty hard to get bored with me as a DJ because I like it all. Some people like a consistent set. Sometimes those kind of sets build and are cool, other times they bore me to tears and seemingly go nowhere. More times than not, that to me is forgettable. There are enough out there losing their mind and buying tracks that may very well all sound the same in the name of being a consistent DJ, with consistent sets that sometimes build and are nice and are other times seamlessly mixed but otherwise lacking dynamics. I figure, I'll lose my mind playing what I like, what YOU like and how I want - Disverse - Dynamic - Dimensionally .

Working on a for sale continuous mix

Hey sexy psychos! Anyone have a "Ultra Music Fest 2011" hang over?! I do! I'm hung over purely from the invites I got on Facebook - geez.

So, I'm working on my first "for sale" continuous mix. The mix will feature all Mikey Shanley dance tracks mixed as a continuous DJ performance. I hope to include other media like videos, pictures, outtakes and the like to be bundled with this release. Due to distribution head aches I may end up doing something like offering the "extra goodies" for free via download upon buying the release from various places like my Band Camp (preferred), iTunes, Amazon and the like. Perhaps you can show me proof of purchase and then you get a special one time use link to DL the other stuff.

Any thoughts on a title for the release? Where are all my graphic designers out there?? Throw a cool design my way and I just might use it.

Hello you beautiful music and art lovers! Thank you for joining me in cyber space! Although I am most recently known as an East Coast traveling DJ by the name of "Sirius", I am also a singer/songwriter, producer, traveler and all around thinker. Hey, no one said my thoughts and ideas were profound! Haha, j/k. Ok, maybe I'm not. Even if you don't feel my thoughts and creations as an artist and musician are profound, they are real and me none the less. I invite you to check out all that I have to offer.

As a child growing up in the urban setting of the Steel City of Pittsburgh's punk and college neighborhood of Oakland, you'll find many songs to be flowing with punk, hip hop and other street like sounds. As a third generation DJ you will also see these rooted tunes to be influenced by the fantasy like and ever present syth like electronic sounds. Although some songs and efforts will be quickly identifiable, I also pride myself on the diversity and experimentation that came along with having an eccentric Grandfather DJ with one hell of a record collection. Expect creations to be straight forward, and others to be a mashup of influences.If you can use any one of the 5 (or more) senses than I know we can have a wonderful artistic relationship.

If you enjoy artists like (but not limited to) Fat Boy Slim, Rancid, Daft Punk, Orgy, Marilyn Manson, Beck, Buckcherry, DJ Irene, The Misfits, the Fugees, Faithless, Third Eye Blind, Korn, Bach, Miles Davis and even Mandy Moore then you are sure to find some ear candy here.
